Hi all, one question about rewriting sentences here please. "I will stay at home until my mom comes back." (Use 'should' to replace 'will' in the sentence.) Is it okay that I say "I should stay at home until my mom comes back."? Thank you. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 114.44.75.72 (臺灣) ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/EngTalk/M.1560396732.A.099.html

There's a bit difference here since 'should' does not
06/13 14:34, 1F

06/13 14:34, 5年前 , 2F
equal to 'will'
06/13 14:34, 2F

06/13 14:34, 5年前 , 3F
For example,
06/13 14:34, 3F

06/13 14:34, 5年前 , 4F
'I should go home, but I will stay here with you.'
06/13 14:34, 4F

06/13 14:34, 5年前 , 5F
So in the end it all depends on what situation you're
06/13 14:34, 5F

06/13 14:35, 5年前 , 6F
saying that sentence in
06/13 14:35, 6F

06/13 14:36, 5年前 , 7F
Considering the meanings of those two words, 'will'
06/13 14:36, 7F

06/13 14:38, 5年前 , 8F
and 'should', the two sentences you wrote might be
06/13 14:38, 8F

06/13 14:38, 5年前 , 9F
or be not used in the same way, and situation of the
06/13 14:38, 9F

06/13 14:39, 5年前 , 10F
conversation makes that difference, but if it's just
06/13 14:39, 10F

06/13 14:39, 5年前 , 11F
a rewrite without considering that the meanings are
06/13 14:39, 11F

06/13 14:40, 5年前 , 12F
same or not, grammar-wise, 'should' works.

Thank you very much for your explanation. This question is from the textbook with no answer in it. I do agree with you that context matters. Thank you. ※ 編輯: JackXD (36.224.40.65 臺灣), 06/15/2019 23:12:57
