Dictionary.com 的每日一字這個字有些複雜但用字根來想會有幫助的 por- = pro- (before) + tent (stretch out) 所以 1) 在事情還沒發生 (before) 就來延伸到 (stretch out) 未來所以此字有 "預兆的" 意思，當然 GRE 裡有一堆 "預兆的" 字記得要分辨是 "吉兆" "凶兆" 還是 "中性兆" 啊... 這裡的 portentous 是 "凶兆的" 其中列舉了幾個同為 "凶兆 "的字，我們補充一下 foreboding ominous sinister 這三個的預兆都是不好的注意 ominous 的名詞 omen 是中性的另外 foreshadow 作動詞的預兆也是中性的然而 Dictionary.com 的例句卻是舉另外兩個字意我們來欣賞一下 2) 因為 stretch out (這裡的 por- 也許可想成 "加強語" intensifier) 所以是 "巨大的" "偉大的" "很棒的" 如: This victory is without doubt a very special and portentous gift of the gods. 3) 因為 stretch out (一樣 por- 做 intensifier) 所以一個人 "自我膨脹" "自命不凡" 這個字就相當於 pompous 注意 pompous 以前我們翻做 "言詞浮誇的" 我們在這裡要特別小心，看一下英解吧 pompous: showing that you think you are more important than other people, especially by using long and formal words 第一重點是 "自己認為自己比別人重要" (self-important) (有貶意!) 所以說話故意用很長很正式的詞彙 (這是我們翻做 "言詞浮誇的" 的原因) 可以說 "言詞浮誇" 是果，但背後的因是 "自命不凡" 根據第三個意思，Dictionary.com 舉的句子太棒了，根本就是 GRE 的考題了各位可以看看自己懂多少! 作者在評判 Arthur Miller "推銷員之死" 這部劇本 (口吻相當負面!)
