the chief supporting force: mainstay -- usually used in plural
這個字等於 tendon，"肌腱" 的意思。
肌腱是肌肉連接骨頭的組織，有了肌腱，肌肉才能順利收縮產生力量，
所以這個字引申為 "主要力量"，常用複數。
最早這個字是做 nerve 的意思，但此義現已過時。
有個片語是
strain every nerve/sinew to do sth. 竭盡全力 (做某事)
把身上的每一根肌腱都拉緊，表示 "竭盡全力"
身體的其他部位也各有引申義，如 eye, stomach, muscle
have an eye for 對 (某事物) 有鑑賞力，如
She has an eye for beauty.
have no stomach for "對 ... 沒胃口" "對某事沒有興趣"
muscle 是 "力量" (strength) 的象徵，sinew 也是。
