While in the Mexico the movement was sponsored by government and the mural paintings were limited on government buildings, the modern mural movement sprang from people, with mural paintings appeared on the community buildings and college campuses. Perhaps the biggest difference is the process: whereas the mural paintings in Mexico reflected individual artists' own vision, modern mural paintings were from artists with people who work on design and creation. The community engagement is a characteristic of the Chicano cultural movements as a whole, which is based on the same foundation as the Chicano civil right movement in mid-1960s. Both of them were a response to the Chicano's need, who were fighting for adequate education, political empowerment and decent working conditions. The artists jointed other cultural groups in making the political statements, and played a key role in taking these statements to the public.
