Although he is the author of over 30 novels, the sixty-five-year-old GuoYi has never enjoyed much fame. When he was first published at the age of 25, he told the crowd, he was happy if even a single book sold. For the first 20 years of his career, he only had time to write at night, as he was supporting his family by working as a legal clerk during the day. It was during this period that he began exploring the powerful themes of social justice and human compassion that have characterized his work.
