ASIMO
When Honda’s ASIMO made a public appearance at the Aichi Expo in 2005,
people were amazed at its agility and its level of human imitation. After two
years of research, the latest generation of ASIMO made a European debut in
2007. It was the result of Honda Motor Company’s hard work. The company’s
final goal is to advance the robot to such a degree that it can be both an
assistant and a replacement for dangerous work. To meet such expectations,
ASIMO includes important technological advancements – a streamlined new
design, fluid and quick movements and new intelligence abilities.
In terms of mobility, it can turn on the spot, change its direction while
running, and slaloming, which is especially important in human movement
imitation research. Although humans can easily avoid obstacles when running,
it is a giant improvement for a machine to move around a desk and run at the
same time.
As for its intelligence improvement, ASIMO can interact with people by
visually recognizing them. The only problem is that it may sometimes move a
bit slower. Perhaps it needs a little refinement before it can serve as a
perfect assistant.
