The following information is from my senior, Pei Yoong. The admission required only GRE, GPA, and letters. Please note the admission committee does not read your SOP. Well...they read it occasionally just to kill time. But it wont be used to favor or against you. The most important is a good balance between your GRE, GPA, and relevant recommendation letters. The minimum requirement for GPA is about 3.5. However, Your GPA depends on where you graduated from. For example, a 3.5 from let's say Cornell carries different weight than the one from second or third tier US university. Therefore, to get into Gatech ChemE a good GPA is pretty important. THe reason being it would be used to judge whether you are a research material. A good GPA simply means they would get what they see. As for the GRE, the minimum for verbal is above 400 (I got 470), a good quantitative, and I am not sure about the AWA since I didnt ask my advisor (graduate admission chair). However, I got a 5 for AWA. My GPA was 3.61 (Purdue University). I am surprised that I got into Gatech. But again, it all depends on a good balance between GPA, GRE, and letters...plus luck. Regarding the letters, make sure you got them from someone who could say about your research ability. It is advisable not to get it from your pastor or your work supervisor unless your work in a research institute. Nothing against the GOD . The school is looking for a Scientist. Bear in mind..they are looking for a research material and not someone who just works hard or does a lot of good deeds. So, make sure you have research experience and if you happen to get the same recommendation letter from an advisor who wrote for someone else, make sure he doesnt say "This is the best student I've ever seen..." My advisor has seen this from a couple of applicants who received the same comments from the same advisor. When you fill out your application, make sure you have a "broad and generic" research interest. Oh yeah, dont bother mentioning bioengineering. My advisor will simply put it aside. They are recruiting for chemE. One more fact, Gatech Bioengineering is a pseudo-department. Try words like nanotechnology, biofuels, catalysis, semiconductor ...etc. Dont be too specific even if you are interested in BIO. You could always select a BIO advisor once you got admitted. I realized it may be confusing. But try to avoid being too specific in your research interest. They can only take so many students who are interested in a certain field. If you are really interested in bioengineering, apply to Biomedical department. It is rich... So to sum up what I got from my advisor. Good GPA from good school, flying GPA from decent school (dont be disappointed, I have seen GPA lower than 3.5 from USA). They have research experience which made up for their shortcoming in this part.... GRE, make sure your verbal doesn't kill you!!! (above 400) Letters...from relevant personnel. Preferrably someone who can indicate your RESEARCH ability. SOP..dont have to be perfect!!! Research interest, do your homework and make sure that particular field is applicable to Gatech. WE do not have a strong process control division anymore.( DR Lee has left) -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 130.207.78.152
