The genesis of the terms "plate height" and "number of theoretical plates"
is a pioneering theoretical study of Martin and Synge 『in which』
they treated a chromatographic column as if it were similar to a distillation
column made up of numerous discrete but contiguous narrow layers

我大概知道怎麼翻,也了解內容。
可是我不知道 我所括弧出來的 in which 代表什麼,
我看in which 後面的句子 they應該是Martin and Synge 而後面 treated as
接上 if it were.... 的假設句 感覺應該很完整
所以想請大大指點一下
