Which of the above sentences is correct?

It might depend on what is true about local services. For many localities
there may be only one bus that comes through. And even if that bus comes
through several times an hour, or a day, 'by the local bus', would be fine,
maybe even preferable, I think.
Probably the more descriptive words that are added to bus (e.g., 5:30,
yellow, Broad Street, express, no. 459, etc.) the more you would use on the,
not by, or by the.

3. I go to work by metro.
4. I go to work by the metro.
Which of the above sentences are correct or more natural?

All are okay.

First, I think the most natural thing is to say 'on' rather than 'by' in
every case. Having said that, 2 and 4 sound correct and natural to me.
