Of late, the term of search engine, "Google," has been officially coined-- that is, with its pedantry definition written on most English dictionaries, inclusive of the authoritative Oxford one. This phenomenon proves that the Google bandwagon will go farther than a passing fad; it is going to stay for long. Nonetheless, despite all its staggering convenience, the Google trend is certainly not that perfect. On the one hand, Google, the powerful search engine, is most famous for its extensive collection of all kinds of information. This fame, on the other hand, is also what it is notorious for, because its comprehensiveness-- with a slight change of wording-- equals a hotchpotch. In short, information unfiltered. What Google presents before us is , hopefully, well-displayed treasure, but also possibly otherwise wide-strewn trash. To distinguish treasure from trash (coincidentally with close pronunciation!) is actually not as easy as their literal meaning may imply. Disguised as a piece of information, useful or not, every message is entitled to guide and beguile. Many classmates of mine tend to rely on Google too much. Lavish references and quotations are profusely cited in their papers (deserving loud applause for their devoted efforts!), which eight to nine out of ten should be academic one. Closely examined, these "documentary evidences" are not at all documentary, but merely clicking gleaning of posted opinions from the Google warehouse. Veracity? "Who cares? What really counts is that it saves the time of searching tiringly all over the library. Thanks to Google, all we have to do is just key in the key word, and Google will take charge of the rest," heart-felt remarks from my not-inborn-lazy classmates, which surprise me and worry my professsors. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.119.29.28
