This English guy in my office lended me this book: A Long Way Down, written by Nick Hornby, who also is the writer of" About a Boy, High Fidelity, and two movies are based on the two novels. One of the bookreview on the backcover is "it's like Breakfast Club by Beckett" If you have seen the movie " Breakfast Club" and read Backett, then you will get the structure of the story. The story is about 4 people of different backgrounds, ages. sexes, professions and nationalities come together on the rooftop on New Year's eve, to jump off the roof and suicide. Martin, Jess, JJ, and Maureen, they are the four main characters in the story. Why would they wanna kill themselves? Well, I'm gonna leave that to you so you can enjoy the pleasure of reading it. The book goes in monolouge by all of them randomly, so you are able to see what is going on what they are thinking. Monologues are actually interesting becasue it reveals someone's thoughts. It's like you are watching a photo, and you see the person smiling, looking good. His monologue may be "what the hell is this? I hate this! Give me break! These clothes are killing me." In this case, you are seeing through the characters, and you know what they think about this weird situation, and about each other and how the whole thing has and will change their life, and the journey they are going through. So you actually get 4 stories in this one book. Isn't it a good deal? :P To be honest, I don't know much about modern English literature in the last 20 or 30 years. What I know is most the classics. I read some pop books. I wasn't interested in Nick Fidelity at all because it seems like the movie industry is always making his books into movies, which is not much pleasing to me. However, when I was reading this one, I like it and I could picture it as movie in my mind. The book is funny, not the laugh-out-loud one, but a smile. My coworker said it good but it's weird. I don't think it's weird. I guess if you read too many ancient stories or watch too much TV, nothing is really weird anymore. As you read it, you may think "ok, my life isn't so bad at all." or "what? what are you thinking about?" If a book can make you think and get some reactions or emotion from you, then it is good to you becasue you've got something diffrent. You've got provoked. You can read more reviews from the readers on Amazon.com The book is on sale in Eslite Bookstore. Maybe you would like to give it a try. --- I am reading another novel, "The Hours". Its structure is kinda like this one, but the context and style are so different. I hope I can finish it soon, because I really wanna read it through. Last but not least, please forgive me poor spelling. I hope PTT have spelling check as well.
