Executing malefactors for their crime may sound brutal and
uncivilized in such a modern world. However a worse evil,
war, has not been abolished even in the most modernized and
powerful nation; maybe they are just necessary evils. There
are at least five major reasons why condemned criminals
should be executed.
First of all, in the perspective of the humanism, the
criminals who are against humanities, if they draw breath,
can jeopardize innocent people. On the other hand, it is
unfair that we may disregard victims’ human right if we only
emphasize criminals’. Besides, the capital punishment will
correspond to humanism if the appropriate procedure of
execution is implemented.
The second opinion is about the criminal policy. The ideal
goal of the penalty is asking criminals to repent. However
some criminals who may have the anti-social personality may
never change behaviors no matter how many chances we give
and how hard we try to rehabilitate them. Those inveterate
malefactors should be executed for reasons of both social
education and crime prevention.
Thirdly, even though miscarriage of justice is inevitable in
the judicial process, it is nowadays very rigid and
scientific. Especially when dealing with cases about death
sentences, courts always judge cases over and over again.
That is the best they can do. Fourthly, in the view of the
effect of deterrence, it is undeniable that capital
punishment still have the effect of deterrence. Especially
before perpetrating any felonious crime, most people will
think twice about the severe consequence - death. In short,
negating the functionalities of capital punishment
completely and arbitrarily is not reasonable.
Last but not the least, in the viewpoint of the victims,
executing the criminals who are guilty of the most heinous
crimes is justice. Besides, “An eye for an eye and a tooth
for a tooth” is a deep-rooted part of culture. Sometimes the
capital punishment maybe is the only way to soothe the
profound hatred of the victims and the victims’ families.
In summary, after taking everything into consideration, we
can safely draw the conclusion that we should not abolish
capital punishment, at least not now. Indeed the death
penalty is brutal absolutely, and some countries have
abolished capital punishment. However, a lot of countries
have reinstated the death penalty after abolishing it. Over
one thousand capital prisoners have been executed in the
United States since the death penalty was reinstated in
1976, which shows how difficult the abolishment is. The day
of the abolishment of any punishment, including capital
punishment, should be the day after the extermination of
crimes.
