Memories About Olympic Games I was impressed by the Olympic Games held in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain because it was first time I could watch the game and feel the atmosphere in front of television at home. I had just become old enough to remember things when the game came in the year. I was 10 years old during the summer vacation ,so I had loads of time to watch live pictures on the television. As the time difference between Taiwan and Spain was huge, I had to stay up for the opening at the midnight. Actually I can hardly remember anything about the ceremony now, except how the torch was lit. There was a shooter who used his bow and arrow to aim the target, where was just the torch designed to place, and lighten the dark. I feel that it was really special and creative so that I still cannot forget the way they did. It also reminds me of how I was enthusiastic about the reports in the papers. In this game, my country also sent official delegation to take part in. Therefore I was very concerned about the status of our athletes and bought lots of newspapers everyday to collect those news clippings and the pasted them on the scarp book . I remember that there were three female Taekwondo athletes joined three different levels of the game and finally all won the gold medals back. The game were really exciting and I was indeed proud of them because I had never thought that those my country’s athletes could join such a big game and even more beat all the other competitors. Today, one of the three athletes are still active in the field of sports critics whereas the rest could be newsless. Besides, our baseball team also did extremely well in the informal baseball games. We knew that baseball was not very popular at that time, so the item was not considered a formal one in this year’s Olympic Games. However, I knew that not only the team but our citizens treated it seriously important because baseball is widespread and was seen as a “national sport” in Taiwan. We did have a severe competiton with our greatest competitor, Japan, who always has the best potential for baseball in Asia. In the game, our starter totally controlled the game and overwhelmed Japan. It was due to the game which the pitcher performed so well that finally he got a long-term contract with a Japanese professional baseball team after the Olympic Games. After that, our team met Cuba in the final and won eventually. Sadly I cannot recall who the startes of both teams were and other details about the game. But most of the key players finally became the members of two new professional baseball teams in Taiwanese professional baseball league later. I think it was really a wonderful and unforgettable experience about watching such a big international games at home for the first time . Thanks to the games, I also knew so many different sports I had never heard before and saw those most excellent athletes all over the world in front of television. I think the spirit of Olympic Games is the most crucial element of all. It is quite touching to see all the best come and compete fairly. Hope the game keep going and promoting its ideas so that we can see more and more people hold together and know the meaning of Olympic Games.
