I am currently taking an English class at NTHU, but the amount of expletive used IN CLASS by students really suprised me. It is not just used once or twice, nor was it by accident, but intentionally used in skits we are suppose to write and perform in front of the entire class. Up to this point, I think only one expletive is missing from their repertoire of swear words (the usual F--k, A--, Sh-- is very well practice and used). I thought maybe it was just because it is in a different language, so students here don't take it as seriously. But then again, I could never imagine saying swear words in front of the class on purpose. Do Taiwanese students and teachers have more tolerance on curse words compared to Americans? Coming from a Chinese background, I have always though that the use of language is taken very seriously. Is it just that I have been gone too long?
