The Mid-Autumn Festival meant fireworks to me as a boy growing up in Tainan City. Later I learned that it was not a custom everywhere in Taiwan. Eating pomelos and moon cakes was not my thing at all. I started out watching my older brother and his friends shoot rockets and play with firecrackers. After finishing dinner, we all went up to the terrace to shoot rockets or throw firecrackers at the neighbors or pedestrians. The neighbors also did the same to us. It wasn’t safe to walk on the streets in Tainan on this night. I remember going to the park one Mid-Autumn Festival night, the whole place seemed to be on fire. By the way, I had lots of fun with my older brother on the terrace in my childhood. We flew kites and paper airplanes. We watched the neighbors’ pigeons circle in the sky with the wild sparrows. We watched sunsets and the moon and the stars.
