Chang Academia Sinica Updated 24 March 2025 This presentation investigates the licensing of embedded clauses and the distribution of empty categories within Tsou, with a particular focus on its infinitive licensing mechanisms. Tsou exhibits two distinct types of infinitival constructions: Type I, wherein the matrix and embedded verbs demonstrate co-variation in their Voice values, and Type II, characterized by a preference for the embedded verb to appear in the Actor Voice (AV), while the matrix verb occurs in the NonActor Voice (NAV). Lin (2015, 2017) categorize Type I as Concordant Serial Verb Constructions (CSVCs) and Type II as Nonconcordant Serial Verb Constructions (NCSVCs), positing that NCSVCs manifest a higher degree of event integration relative to CSVCs. However, Lin' s analysis raises two unresolved questions: Firstly, how does a concordant ( unifying) structure, marked by Voice agreement, exhibit lower event integration than its nonconcordant (nonunifying) counterpart? It is noteworthy that CSVCs are argued to involve restructuring (i.e., complementation) (Chang 2014), whereas NCSVCs are posited to lack such restructuring (Chang 2017, 2024). Secondly, why does an allegedly less integrated (dependent) embedded clause, subject to stricter grammatical constraints, exhibit a greater degree of restriction than its allegedly more integrated (dependent) counterpart? It should be emphasized that Voice Concord represents a more stringent grammatical requirement than default AV marking. To address these analytical puzzles, this study situates them within a broader framework of embedding licensing (cf. Kiparsky & Kiparsky 1970; Grimshaw 1979; Bresnan 1982; Givón 1980, 2001, 2009; Noonan 1985) and endeavors to formulate a comprehensive theory of embedding licensing, drawing upon insights from Generative Syntax ( Chomsky 1981; Rizzi 1990; Landau 2000; Wurmbrand 2024; Pesetsky 2021) and Cognitive/Functional Grammar (Givón 2009). This investigation aims to provide a robust account for the aforementioned puzzles in Tsou and contribute to the development of a more refined theory of embedding licensing in general. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 111.255.104.213 (臺灣) ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Linguistics/M.1743646004.A.620.html
