Important tips and information regarding the Wharton group-based interview
starting this year!! Special thanks for Kevin's information!!
The Wharton group-based interview this year was even more challenging to
prepare for than the HBS interview/post-interview essay.
Essentially, each applicant was assigned to a group of six (although due to
scheduling problems, some applicants who did their interviews in Shanghai
ended up in a group with much fewer people), and the group was asked to
discuss one of the following two topics for one hour:
1) As potential Wharton students, what is one key business skill that you
think post-business school professionals must have in order to be successful,
long-term, in their career?
2). What is the most important societal challenge that could be addressed
more effectively by the business community today?
Each applicant had to give a one-minute response to one of these questions,
and then the group discussed the ideas given by all the applicants in an open
forum for the remainder of the session.
There was a moderator for the discussion, but the moderator was very
"hands-off" and pretty much let the group decide its own discussion style and
direction.
Given this, the key areas that our Wharton clients prepped for were
1) how to give an effective one-minute response, and
2) how to engage the rest of the group in a way that's considered productive
and positive in the eyes of the Wharton adcom.
