No I think you worry too much about what others think.
Hey my parents paid for my tuition and all living expenses in the first semester
too. Then for years and years I never needed their help again until this semester,
my department cut off my TAship in the last minute and I had to ask my parents
to help again.
Do I feel uncomfortable? Yes but that's because my department handled it so
poorly and made it too late to look for other opportunities, not because I
had to talk to my family for support. You need to decide what's the best for
you and if the best means studying PhD with your family's support, why not as
long as your family is willing to help?
For those who study PhD without family help, do you know a lot of people have
to get student loans from banks and start paying off the huge debts right after
graduation? If you can borrow money from your family with no sky-high interest,
why not?
