Taipei English Culture & Conversation Club
1. Theme:Explore American Culture and Christianity
Group Leader: Narie Hsing
Narie is a skilled teacher and counselor with 25 years of professional
experience in the U.S. She received a bachelor's degree in Economics &
Mathematics from Indiana University and a master's degree in Social Work from
the University of Michigan. Narie has a unique cultural background from
having lived in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the United States. She traveled
extensively and lived in 8 different states in the U.S. in the past 31 years.
2. Best Match
a. If you plan to study abroad in the U.S. or other countries
b. If your significant other (spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend) will be studying
abroad and you will be going along
c. If you are interested in learning about Christianity
3. Place: NTU, NTNU area
Time: 2-4 pm, 10 Sundays (July 6 - Sept 7)
4. Meeting Outline
1:30-2:00 pm Brunch/Fellowship (optional)
2:00-2:45 pm American Culture 360
Each week we will explore an area of American culture such as holidays, food,
music, sports, politics, social issues and more.
The highlight will be taking a fun field trip to enjoy authentic American
food together.
2:45-4:00 pm Introduction to Christianity
Do you know?
- Christianity is a major part of American tradition and culture
- 75% of Americans identify themselves as Christians
- Two out of the three major U.S. holidays are Christian holidays
- Many well known Americans are Christians including Abraham
Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and current U.S. president Barack
Obama
- All U.S. currency has this on it: "In God We Trust"
Discussion topics will include:
- The foundation of Christianity: the love of God for all people
- God is love: what does it mean?
- How is God's love different from human love?
- 4 types of love: love of family, friends, lovers, and the love of God
(Reference: The Four Loves, by C. S. Lewis)
- How can you receive and experience God's love?
5. Joining Requirements
English proficiency: intermediate
Education: college students, graduate students, post graduate professionals
Commitment: (1) attending minimum 8 meetings (2) completing weekly
assignment. Study materials will include book excerpts, articles and videos.
Discussion questions will be given out one week in advance.
