個人推測是
in在這邊算是adv.這個沒問題
in between算是一種普遍用法，通常用在特別強調兩者空間某個位置之中
用in between會顯得比較自然，例如
There is a big stone in between the two trees.
There is a partition in between the two floors.
第二句會用起來怪怪的....而且不合乎文法
時間也是如此。
也有是說between通常是c是從a到b，或連接a和b
而in between是c在a和b某個點之間，並無和a,b連接
總而言之，問語言學者最快.....XD
母語人士大概只是感覺用對了就是對了.....就跟我們中文是一樣
我覺得第一句若改成The table is between the chairs.唸起來感覺還ok
但是第二句只有between就覺得怪怪的....in between唸起來比較順
