ago以現在為基準，即指現在以前，常與一般過去時態連用。
before以過去某一時間為基準，即指在那之前，常與過去完成式時態連用。
EX: He left two years ago.
他在兩年前離開的。
She said that he had left two years before.
她說他是在兩年前離開的。
另外，before泛指以前，不與具體時間連用。可用在一般過去式與現在完成式。
EX：He didn’t know that before.
EX：I have read the book before.
