成衣價格漲定了 Clothing Prices to Rise 10% Starting in Spring
一、掌聲響起!這是新聞最喜歡形容物價飆漲的用語，不過隨著經濟復甦，美國物價也開
始準備漲價，其中成衣就是一例。
二、The era of falling clothing prices is ending. Clothing prices have
dropped for a decade as tame inflation and cheap overseas labor helped hold
down costs.
Retailers and clothing makers cut frills and experimented with fabric blends
to cut prices during the recession. But as the world economy recovers and
demand for goods rises, a surge in labor and raw materials costs is squeezing
retailers and manufacturers who have run out of ways to pare costs.
三、多益英檢文法重點:
1. era(N):年(時)代，clothing(N):服裝，decade(N):十年，tame(adj):溫馴的、聽話的
，inflation(N):物價膨脹，hold down:壓制，frill(N):衣服摺邊，experiment(V、N):
實驗，fabric blend:混紡織物，recession(N):不景氣，good(N):物品，surge(N):上升
，raw material:原物料，squeeze(V):擠壓，retailer(N):經銷商，run out:用盡，
pare(V):削減。
2. clothing(N):成衣，相似字有garment，例如成衣工廠 garment factory，這裡文章指
的是衣服價格由於inflation(通貨膨脹)較tame(溫和)，加上labor(勞力)價格相對較
cheap(便宜)，不是指人的個性，這裡的cheap labor是指paid wage或salary(資方給出去
的薪資等價格)，因此一直在falling(下降)，相反詞就是surge(上升)或rising，在經濟
名詞中，經常出現。
3.第三行中用了2次cut，都是”減”的意思，不過第一次是指用剪刀剪掉，如文中的cut
the frill，第二次的cut the price 則是指透過某些方式後，使資方的成本”減少”。
Hold down是指廣義上的壓制，因此上述所提到的方式都可以造成預期的結果。
4. squeeze(V):擠得意思，例如to squeeze a toothpaste tube(擠一條牙膏)，另外在商
業預約時，也可以指擠出時間與他人碰面，例如 Ms. Smith squeezed in my
appointment with Dr. Jones.(史密斯小姐將我排入瓊斯醫師的門診了。)
5. pare(V):削減，我們可以從這個字認識其他單字，spare(adj):多餘的，spare part:
零用件，parent(N):雙親，parings(N):碎屑。
