Postdoctoral position in Digital Atlases of Development
The Myers lab is looking for postdocs with computational and
biological expertise to work on building and analyzing
quantitative models of development from microscopy data.
By way of background: For the last ten years the Myers lab has
been designing and building light microscopes and designing and
creating computer vision software to interpret the resulting
imagery. The group is primarily computational consisting of a
lively mix of computer scientists, physicists, and engineers. In
the area of microscopy our strength is in light-sheet microscopy
and computational methods for inverting the complex refractive
distortions induced during deep tissue imaging. In the area of
computer vision, we have developed flexible and effective methods
for segmenting and tracking cells and nuclei, that importantly
allow very ergonomic curation of automated results and that allow
our systems to automatically improve their performance as this
editing takes place. The impetus for these advances is the goal of
being able to build accurate and quantitative models of cell
lineages over long developmental time arcs, for example, the
complete development of a worm from fertilization to its adult
form, and the embryogenesis of a fly from fertilization to
hatching as a larva 24 hours later. We now believe that our
microscopes and software place us within striking distance of
these goals.
We therefore seek adventurous postdocs with experience in both the
computational and biological sciences to develop the first such
models and to data-mine them for insight into the biophysical and
genetic control of development. The ideal candidate would have (a)
experience in computer vision and image analysis methods, (b)
experience with the handling of biological specimens and the use
of advanced light microscopes, and (c) a good understanding of
cell biology and development. An acceptable candidate must meet
requirement (a), be willing to learn (b), and have at least a
moderate understanding of (c).A candidate must be interested in
and preferably fascinated by developmental biology.
We are located at the Center for Systems Biology Dresden which is
a part of the campus of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell
Biology and Genomics in Dresden, Germany. Dresden is a relatively
small town on the scenic Elbe River with a beautiful old city
center and an edgy, creative “new” city. You can see more about
