The Chinese Surnames were originally derived from ancient surname totems and
origin from each surname has its own unique story.
The clan totem represents a social structure, a belief, a custom, but also a form of art of primitive
people.
Since I have great love toward both Oriental and Western art, I
decide to use a unique way of combination to create and present Chinese
surname totem- through the integration of the calligraphy, and the style of
Western painting and contemporary visual arts.
Since the Chinese character is a shape of text could be composed by three different factors, shape, sound
and meaning.
I decide to utilize the shape and meaning part in our expression which could be easier to apply in design. A way to express the
beauty of surname totem is through calligraphy, a traditional form of Chinese
art.
Through the variation of the lines and composition, calligraphy has
been widely exploited by Asian calligrapher to show the beauty of Chinese
character to the public.
Through extensive study of literatures such as archeology, philology, Chinese history, and legends for each surname
character and totem, I used calligraphy to depict the lines and composition
of each surname totem.
Then I chose the coloring styles from Western and Contemporary art on each creation. Some styles were inspirations from
renowned Western Artists such as: Picasso, Miro, Andy Warhol and such and
others were enlightenment from various sources though out my life.
Different from regular Chinese surname totems we could found on the literature, this
approach gave each surname totem a new life through integrating ancient
Chinese character, legend of surname, beauty of calligraphy and distinct
coloring styles enlightened by various renowned modern and contemporary
artists.
For example, the Ke totem (No. 99) depicts a person holding arrow
in that the ancestors of Ke clan were craftsmen proficient in making
wood-based weapon. In the coloring process, I chose Milo-like style.
Another example is Fei totem (No. 95). The Fei totem depicts the string, knife and
shells which were used as money in ancient China in that the ancestor of Fei
clan were proficient in financing and people used to use strings to tie
shells together to carry them.
For the coloring style, I got my inspiration from Andy Warhol.
Because of the depth and the history of Chinese surname culture, the number of Chinese surname is astounding. Different composition
and coloring style I chose on different surname totems also represents the
diversity Chinese surname totem.
Another reason I make this Chinese surname totem collection this way is that I believe this colorful will be visually
more appealing to people.
I hope this could create a way to introduce the Chinese culture to the world and let people know more about the depth and
beauty of Chinese character and Chinese surname.
So far I had created more than 150 surname totems and the creation is ongoing.
Among those totems I created, 104 totems were introduced to the public through an exhibition in
2009 at the Keelung cultural exhibition hall hence I provided these 104
different Chinese surname totem as a collection for this Red dot
communication design award.
