大家好，請教一下在顏元叔的「大學閱讀文法」一書中，有這一則內容： As a matter of fact, if the father is a drunk and/or a poor provider, the relationship may even be strengthened because of a natural sympathy that may be added to the normal devotion through religion, propinquity, sentiment, and habit. (Harry Golden, "Fathers And Sons") ----- 想請問介系詞片語「through religion, propinquity, sentiment, and habit」的修飾對象。書裡的解說是說，上述的介系詞片語修飾「the normal devotion」。 http://i.imgur.com/0oHIRHj.jpg

可是照理來說，這個介系詞片語其實也可以修飾「a natural sympathy that may be added」，好像意思也蠻合理的？這該如何判斷呢？有在英語討論區發問，網友Tdol回答： Devotion can result from religion, proprinquity, sentiment and habit. However, a father who is drunk or a poor provider may also have strong bonds caused by natural sympathy, which excuses his behaviour. Counter-intuitively, being a weaker father may cause a strong bond. （https://goo.gl/Ktna1T）就我的理解，他是從Devotion這個字義，認為上述的介系詞片語確實是這樣修飾沒錯。而 natural sympathy是自然出現的。（題外話：以常理來看，一個酗酒或是失功能的爸爸，真的會引起「自然的同情」嗎？我滿懷疑的。）所以像這種介系詞片語可能產生的，模擬兩可的修飾，似乎真的只能從意思來判斷囉？不過我認為，這對於我們非母語人士來說，還真有點困難。像我看到這種句子，不自覺地就會先入為主的落入「may be added...through」的句型中QQ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 114.32.32.215 ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Eng-Class/M.1505143843.A.A31.html
