Our culture is like you said "uneasy to talk to someone they don't know pretty well." I think it depands on the occasion you are. In MRT,everyone is hurry to go somewhere,so they don't wanna spend too much time on there. If the place where people will stay longer and have more time to know or observe you, that'll be better. For example, your office, night stores, coffee shop or at fast-food restaurant where everyone can relax. Being friendly, positive and easy-going is good.
