[News] The Coldest Run in the World
Antarctica Marathon
The 8th Antarctica Marathon & Half-Marathon is scheduled for
February 26, 2007.
You will come face to face with icebergs, penguins, seals and
whales while exploring the most pristine corner of the planet.
Historians and scientists will provide lectures on board ship and
wildlife excursions during landings in remote areas among seal
colonies and penguin rookeries and at research bases.
Departure from the U.S. is scheduled late February with overnight
flights to Buenos Aires for a three night stay in Argentina's
capital. The deluxe Marriott Hotel will host our guests and the
welcome reception and banquet.
A completed booking form and a deposit of $300 per person is being
accepted.
Marathon Tours & Travel, the event organizer and exclusive tour
operator, in conjunction with Peregrine Adventures of Australia
will provide the itinerary for runners and accompanying friends
for this journey to the end of the Earth. The Akademik Ioffe
(Peregrine Mariner) and the Akademik Vavilov (Peregrine Voyager),
will make the journey from Ushuaia through the Beagle Channel
across Drake Passage and through the Shetland Islands and along
the Antarctic Peninsula.
The course on King George Island located off the tip of the
Antarctic Peninsula loops through the scientific research bases of
Uruguay, Chile, China and Russia who provide water, medical
assistance and supportive cheers. Great care is taken to leave
behind zero impact on the environment in this sensitive ecosystem.
We guarantee that you will experience a most challenging running
experience.
Want more excitement?
How about our options for kayaking along the fjords of the
Antarctic Peninsula among sculptured icebergs, pods of minke
whales, and seals lazing on ice flows. We will also conduct the
3rd Antarctica Kayak Championships which were hotly contested in
2005. Or try camping overnight on the peninsula. We supply the
tents and sleeping bags.
The goal of many marathoners is to run a 26 mile race on all 7
continents. This is the only opportunity to run a marathon on the
"Seventh Continent".
In the past, runners have represented many countries including
Canada, U.S., Norway, Germany, Great Britain, Bermuda, Ireland,
France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark,
Poland, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Hungary,
Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Bermuda, Bahamas, Venezuela, Australia,
South Africa, Hong Kong, Russia, Japan and New Zealand.
