It is astonishing but not surprising to learn another Chinese “black-hearted” product. While this time tainted dairy products wreck heavier and wilder impacts to mainland China, I would have not paid such attention if the event did not affected Taiwan. According to press reports, though Taiwan government barred all imports of Chinese dairy products at the first place, a large amount of the imported products have been processed by local processors and spread in market. Subsequent orders have been issued to remove all such products from market for further examination, which unavoidably incurring vast economic losses to interested entities, including importers, processors, wholesalers, and retailers. Sadly, after reading this news, what strikes me first is not babies’ kidneys or public health but compensation. Well, money, if you like to say so. To the date, I saw a lot of reports regarding complain from firms and rages from people, but it seems that no legal actions are to be initiated against the Chinese culprit, Sanlu Co. From a lawyer’s point of view, I would say this should be an opportunity either for business or for reputation. I do not doubt that some large food companies may be capable to sue the culprit with their own legal resources. However, middle- and small-sized victims may even never think about seeking compensations for their losses in such “international” event. I consider that the current situation is appropriate for a lawyer or a law firm to jump into the event, collecting cases and initiating a trans-strait class tort action against Sanlu plus Chinese government with cooperation with Chinese law firms. Of course to win the lawsuit will not be easy and to obtain full compensation will be more difficult (Some reported that Chinese government is trying to repress actions initiated by their people.), but at least it is a good opportunity to generate business and enhance celebrity. I wonder if some large firms have started planning that, or they are also cursing the products and the government with the press. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 216.165.4.149
