I simply think the debate of whether there's universal moral truth
depends on different person's opinion after I read this article.
Also, even in academia, different scholars hold different opinions.
I personally agree that there's universal moral truths which are intrinsic,
for example, love.
However, some other moral standards that have an ambiguious nature needs
to be explained in order to identify it's external standard.
I agree with what the author said below :
============================================================
Some may argue that moral sense or sentiment varies across people, cultures,
or times, and there is no moral sense or sentiment which people universally
agree on. This argument entails that moral sense or sentiment cannot identify
moral truth. Responding to this criticism, I present three defenses and
examine them. The first defense is that Hutcheson, Hume, Smith, and James
Wilson suggest there is universal moral sense or sentiment. I argue that even
if it exists, some external standard is necessary to identify it. The second
and third defenses are to adopt a general viewpoint theory or an ideal
observer theory, both of which give objectivity and universality to moral
judgments based on moral sense or sentiment.
============================================================
Hopefully it can give us a better understanding and clear our minds.
I simply cannot accept Nihilism. As to prove it's wrong, I don't think
I am powerful and smart enough to deny its existence. I simply don't feel
happy or joy or pursuaded when I heard of this theory. Sorry.
Hope it won't hurt your feelings. You have the right to choose how your life
should be like too. I accept that, but will never adore Nihilism.
