[Mind] alone together
one day, my sister went to an afternoon tea gathering
with a couple of her college classmates.they planned this as
their first class reunion after graduation, and they all sounded quite excited
about it.
here they were, sitting around a round table, with snacks and tea on it.
Indeed, they got together finally though two of them were half an hour delayed.
Everybody was happy both made it. A-few-minute exchanges of greeting and
smiling, here came another kind of gathering-- a smart phone exhibition.
I think they couldn't help it. After all, they paid for an unlimited online
service. They couldn't afford not to be connected to "the world." Often, I
heard her laugh at those who spend most of the time staying indoors with a
computer and the Internet. Somehow, I wanted to refuted, but i didn't, that
she has turned herself into a computer with the Internet connection herself.
I can just ask her for the internet service whenever she is around. How
convenient! and she is more than happy showing me how powerful her phone is.
She feels contented with the service she is able to provides.
Back to her class reunion. According to the picture she showed me, I found it
interesting that all of them were looking down at their portable devices.
No conversation, no eye contacts with each other. Nonetheless, they seemed
happy with the little screen, for they kept smiling at it. How fascinating!
It seemed they needed companions, but not friendship,
a shared room, but not intimacy, and a phone to sleep with, but not a partner
to hold on to.
Now, I can get over the sneer that I can't afford a smart phone.X
