[Talk] What Money Can't Buy
Just bought Michael Sandel's "What Money Can't Buy" a couple days ago.
Over the last few decades, market values seem to have crowded out nonmarket
norms in our everyday life. According to Michael Sandel, "we have drifted from
having a market economy to being a market society."
Not only can we buy cars and houses with money, but also many other privileges.
In the U.S., you can hire an Indian surrogate mother to carry a pregnancy for
you for $6250 dollars.
You can also buy the right to emit carbon if you don't wish to upgrade your
facilities to shut the environmentalists.
You can even buy the cell phone number of your doctor for $1500 to $25000 a
year to gain a 24/7 access and even same day appointments.
As money becomes more important in our lives, more people will start judging
people based on how much they make, instead of their inner values and
character. Is that really the way we want to live our lives?
