As of the start of this year, the Vanguard MSCI EAFE ETF (NYSEArca: VEA) now costs investors 0.12 percent a year from 0.15 percent prior. That’s about a third less than its direct competitor, the iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund (NYSEArca: EFA). It’s also less than the Schwab International Equity ETF (NYSEArca: SCHF), which has an annual expense ratio of 0.13 percent. However, the Schwab fund isn’t an exact competitor to Vanguard’s VEA and iShares’ EFA, as it includes Canadian companies. While Vanguard and Schwab are widely considered to be in something of a price war in terms of ETF expense ratios, iShares has never explicitly signed on to such a challenge, even though its huge developing market ETF, the iShares MSCI Emerging Market Index Fund (NYSEArca: EEM), was surpassed by the Vanguard MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSEArca: VWO), in part because it’s the cheaper of the two. VWO now costs 0.22 percent after Vanguard cut the price of the ETF effective this year, compared with the 0.69 percent price tag on EEM, which also reflected a price cut that was effective Jan. 1. Broader iShares Vulnerability? Some ETF industry sources have wondered if other well-established iShares funds—including EFA—were vulnerable to the same fate as EEM. As it stands, iShares’ EFA has more than $40 billion in assets, while Vanguard’s VEA has a bit more than $6 billion. These sources have also wondered if the iShares Barclays Aggregate Bond Fund (NYSEArca: AGG) was also vulnerable to a loss of market share. AGG competes head-to-head with the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (NYSEArca: BND). iShares’ AGG has almost $11 billion in assets and costs investors 0.24 percent, while BND has almost $9.5 billion in assets, but costs investors half as much as AGG.
