His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine
homeland, far outside the range of present-day
glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the
concept of an age in which great ice sheets had
existed in now currently temperate areas.

我想請問時態的問題，
OG上面說ice sheets existed要用過去式，不用過去完成式
我看了CD上的解釋，都說因為沒有明顯時間順序上的比較，所以要用過去式，
但能否解釋為ice sheets存在於Louis Agassiz提出concept之前
所以是發生在過去的過去，使用過去完成式呢？
