本期 TIME 讀後有兩個有趣的用法值得介紹 1) -shy 的字，如 camera-shy, debt-shy 2) 片語 in the pipeline 這些都是 "字全看得懂，但合起來不懂" 的範例，所以要記啊! 1) 我們可以利用名詞 + -shy 造字此處 shy 和 "害羞" 無關而是表達 "不情願" "逃避" 的意思英解: -shy is added to nouns to form adjectives which indicate that someone does not like a particular thing, and tries to avoid it. For example, someone who is camera-shy does not like having their photograph taken. 有些人不喜歡拍照 (好像男生比較多?)，每次照團體照的時候就跑開，或是當照相者，這種人就是 camera-shy 另外 TIME 提到為了振興經濟，政府希望銀行多借錢給中小企業，以活絡市場， But companies are debt-shy. 這是說 "公司不情願增加債務" 2) in the pipeline 字面是指 "在輸送管中"，但引申為 "已經在籌劃、討論" "即將要發生" 的意思。想像天然氣 is in the pipeline，馬上就要送到你家了... 英解: something that is in the pipeline is being discussed, planned or prepared and will happen or exist soon 看個例句吧 TIME p.42 Xtreme, which employed 57 people at the beginning of 2009, installed its first major system in Hawaii over the summer and now has $100 million worth of orders in the pipeline. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.175.59
