我是謝忠理，我來說明一下我對這個題目的看法。 ============================================================ For an obscure poet to have penned such a refined, poignant sonnet is not at all ____________. The sonnet, after all, has been a favored form for hundreds of years amongst the amateur and lionized alike. I would be ____________, on the other hand, had not one, out of the sheer number produced during this time, surpassed Shakespeare on a bad day. (B) puzzling (D) confounded alankuo (原 po) 的Ｑ與Ａ ============================================================ Ｑ：我自己的理解是這樣：對於一個默默無名的詩人寫出如此完美、深刻的十四行詩一點也不 __________。畢竟，十四行詩這個形式被喜已經有百年的時間愛業餘在愛好者和有名的人之間。另一方面，我會 __________，如果沒有一個人產生的數量超過莎士比亞在最糟的時期的數量。Ａ：alan 的翻譯前半大致沒有問題，但是最後半句「如果……的數量」翻譯錯了。正確的意思是在現今詩作盛產，數量如此之多的情況下，如果沒有人寫出來的詩，能超越莎士比亞的劣作的話，我才會覺得 __________ 。所以，不是「數量」超越，而是「品質」超越。Ｑ：Blank (ii) 因為已經被大家所接受，所以很人寫這種形式的詩，數量就會很多所以，如果還沒超過莎士比亞最糟的時期的數量，作者就會『很困惑』，(D) confounded Ａ：如上所述，這裡不是「數量」超越，而是「品質」。不過，這不太影響作答，所以答案還是 (D) Ｑ：Blank (i) 因為一直以來有很多人寫這種形式的詩，今天就算是一個默默無名的人寫的很好，那一點也不會『很罕見』, (A) rare 我想請問一下，為什麼Blank (i) 不能選 (A) rare Ａ：這個問題要講清楚，需要先釐清 rare 與 on the other hand 兩個關鍵字組的含意。下面我列出兩本字典裡的解說，來幫助釐清選答時的判斷準則。 (1) 不選 rare 的理由 ------------------------------------------------------------ 來自Longman Dictionary of Common Errors rare adjective ×: Water is very rare in some parts of the country. √: Water is very scarce in some parts of the country. If certain things are rare there are only a few of them in existence: 'Rare coins are usually worth a lot of money.' A rare event is one that hardly ever happens: 'I was lucky enough to witness one of her rare public appearances.' To describe something that is usually common but for some reason is difficult to obtain at a particular time or in a particular place, use scarce: 'After the war, food and clothing were scarce.' -------------------- 重點說明：從上述字典解釋裡可以看出，rare 是指「存在的少」，不是「難找得到」。如果是東西多，只是找不到而已，那要用 scarce。 ------------------------------------------------------------ 回頭來說原題。原題後半說了「在現今詩作盛產，數量如此之多的情況下」，所以確定了十四行詩的整體數量大。而前半說：「對於一個默默無名的詩人來說，能寫出如此完美、深刻的十四行詩一點也不 __________。」這句開頭「對於一個默默無名的詩人來說」，背後的含意是，精彩的十四行詩數量不少，在名家 (lionized) 筆下可能俯拾即是，只是對於個默默無名的詩人來說，可能不常見。那麼在這種前後文之下，這個「不常見」指的整體數量不少，只是（在默默無名的詩人這部分）找不太到，那麼應該用的字是 scarce，而不是 rare。 (2) 要選 puzzling 的理由 ------------------------------------------------------------ 來自Longman Language Activator ■on the other hand adverb use this at the beginning of a sentence when you have just mentioned one side of an argument or situation and you are going to mention the opposite side: 例句： "Nuclear power is relatively cheap. On the other hand, you could argue that it's not safe." "The hamburger was tough and overcooked.
