Declines in adult men's wages from about 1800 to 1860 as Europe
industrialized would suggest that poverty increased during that period. Yet
historians document the proliferation of material possessions that apparently
altered European Society beginning in the late eighteenth century. In
explanation, De Vries describes what he calls an "industrious revolution," in
which more household members spent more time producing commodities, and in
turn purchased an increasing proportion of the things they needed. De Vries
advocates differentiation among household members in assessment of the
consequences of this industrious revolution, arguing that it increased
women's economic power. [It should be said that women's low wages precluded
economic independence.] Nevertheless, the industrious revolution may have
moved some forms of material wealth to women.
