The standard spoken language now in general use throughout the People's
Republic of China, based on the northern dialects, esp. that of Peking. Cf.
KUO-YU.
1950 J. DE FRANCIS Nationalism & Lang. Reform in China v. 94 He expressed his
views..in the following statement: ‘..China now has a p'u-t'ung hua (common
language) which can serve as a general standard.’ 1968 P. KRATOCHVIL Chinese
Lang. Today v. 164 This concept of the so-called ptnghua ‘Common Language’
is largely based on the latter stage of guoy (the two terms guoy and ptnghua
are now almost synonymous). 1971 R. NEWNHAM About Chinese 75 The Communists
took up the [‘spoken language’] of the older ‘literary revolutionists’,
renaming it ptnghua or ‘common speech’. The inspiration became firmly
social. Ptnghua is now what the West generally thinks of when it speaks of ‘
Mandarin’... It is adopted by all the communications media in China (the
phrase ‘national language’ is not heard), while in print it is virtually
standard. 1973 T. R. TREGEAR Chinese vi. 124 The pai hua has had a profound
influence since today it forms the basis of p'u t'ung hua, ‘usual words’
now in universal use throughout the land. 1976 W. H. CANAWAY Willow-Pattern
War xv. 156 He spoke enough pu-t'ung hua, the Common Chinese, for Shao to
give him instructions before we left. 1978 Nagel's Encycl.- Guide: China 68 A
common spoken language, now known as putonghua (Common Language) was imposed
throughout China.
