Linguistic Field(s): Linguistic Theories; Morphology; Phonology; Semantics;
Syntax
Submission Deadline: 01-Nov-2026
The 49th edition of GLOW will be held at the School of Arts and Humanities of
the University of Lisbon, Portugal, from 22 to 25 March 2027 — 35 years after
the 1992 Lisbon GLOW, where Richard Kayne presented the fundamentals of his
antisymmetry of syntax in his keynote address.
The main colloquium (22–24 March) has no designated theme. Contributions are
welcome on all topics, in all subdisciplines of the field, from any
perspective compatible with generative objectives. The organisers of GLOW49
would like to promote representation of work on varieties of Portuguese and
languages in the Portuguese-speaking world, as well as work on both spoken and
signed modalities of language.
The main colloquium will feature two types of oral presentation (long
presentations, max. 40 minutes, and shorter presentations, max. 25 minutes,
each followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer period), and a wide selection
of posters. Abstract submissions are limited to a maximum of one single-
authored and one co-authored abstract per person. Please note that submitting
the same abstract to both the main colloquium and one or more of the workshops
is not permitted.
On 25 March, there will be three workshops in parallel sessions. The topics of
the three workshops are the following:
- phonology, morphology, and their interactions
- the syntax, semantics, and acquisition of control phenomena
- the morphosyntax and semantics of clausal hypotaxis
Each workshop will feature a selection of 25-minute oral presentations, each
with a 10-minute question-and-answer period.
PLEASE NOTE that the deadline for submission of abstracts to both the main
colloquium and the three workshops is 1 November 2026. This deadline will not
be extended.
Abstracts for both the main colloquium and the three workshops should be
submitted as fully anonymized PDF documents that do not exceed two single-
spaced pages (A4 with 2.5 cm margins or US letter with 1 inch margins on all
sides), including examples, references and tables/figures, in a font no
smaller than 12pt Times New Roman. In the application form, authors are
requested to provide a list of max. 5 keywords.
Abstracts should be submitted on the Oxford Abstracts platform, accessible via
the following link: https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/83205/submitter
The main colloquium, the poster sessions, and the three workshops will be held
at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (Faculdade
de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa), located in the Cidade Universitária
campus (Campo Grande area).
