(adults) max infusion rate 50 mg/min
(neonates) max infusion rate 1 to 3 mg/kg/min (max 50 mg/min)
avoid continuous infusion
flush line with saline following infusion to avoid local venous irritation caused by alkalinity of solution
inject directly into a large vein through a large-gauge needle or IV catheter
#Depakine
A suggested dose to begin therapy in adults is up to 10 mg/kg by intravenous
injection over 3 to 5 minutes followed by intravenous infusion, as necessary,
up to a maximum of 2.5 g daily. The usual intravenous dose for children is
in the range of 20 to 30 mg/kg daily. If doses in excess of this are required
, plasma-valproate concentrations must be monitored, and if the dose exceeds
40 mg/kg daily, clinical chemistry and haematological parameters should also
be monitored.
