3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Advertising can tell
you a lot about a country. Use specific reasons and examples to support your
answer.

Advertising is created by manufacturers to promote products and to attract
people to purchase. To stimulate people buying the products, it is important
to give a common image, especially something deeply rooted in people’s mind
of a specific culture. Thus, we can know many special characteristics of a
culture through advertising.
Advertising always reflects the uniqueness of the local or historical daily
life, which directly represents the characteristics of a culture. Take
Japanese advertising for example, things like kimonos and geisha girls are
the most symbolic images rooted in people’s mind all over the world thus
when seeing kimonos and geishas, we can immediately connect the product with
Japan as well as have a general picture for Japanese culture. Consequently,
the advertising not only gives a more concrete memory to the product but also
stands out the local lifestyle and values.
Another way that advertising displays the specialty for a country is that
sometimes when traveling to a foreign country, television shows the unique
products that you were not familiar with before. That is to say, you have
never heard about that product in your indigenous country, which makes you
even being confused about how to use it! From this experience, advertising
provides the foreign people with the chances to know the fresh objects as
well as to understand the exclusive customs for a specific culture or a
country.
In conclusion, advertising illustrates not only the local daily life but also
the special customs from a culture, which can tell a lot to audience about a
country. It shows the common memory for local people and creates the
opportunities for foreigners to explore the core values of a culture.
