"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society.
Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help
bring about a better society."
The speaker asserts that socialization decides the destiny of society,
and that we have not yet had the idea about how to raise children to create a
better society. I find the statement problematic. While socialization plays
an important role in the development of society, there are other equally
essential elements and useful approaches known to bring about a better
society.
Admittedly, socialization, which means the ability to deal with and
cooperate with others, is necessary for one to succeed. In the field of
sport, business and politic, there are many cases where group works
contribute to reaching great achievements. For example, a baseball team
requires not only players, but also coaches, doctors, and managers. No matter
how excellent a player is, he has to work with other colleague to win a game.
Similarly, a chairman needs capable assistants to manage the company. One who
works alone seems hardly to have good performance.
However, socialization, though valuable, is nothing more than one of the
essential elements to result in a better society. There are many other
characteristics which is of equal importance as socialization, such as
individuality and creativity. History has shown that most of the time, it is
individuals rather than groups of people that drove the society forward. Take
Napoleon for example. His great achievement can be attributed to his unique
personality and will. Besides, some thoughts are great because they have
different viewpoints from those of the public, being the power to bring
forward the society.
Since we have recognized some essential factors to improve the society,
we can at least try to develop educational approaches to ensure that our
children acquire these abilities. Although times change, there are some core
educational goals remain. For instance, we always expect our descendents are
honest. Innovation requires solid knowledge and techniques. Teachers and
parents should adapt themselves to the need of the time and make sure that
children absorb them well.
In sum, in addition to socialization, some other important
characteristics are equally influential to the society as well. According to
these factors, we can have efficient approaches to raise our children to
ameliorate the society.
