Annie started the meeting punctually and asked every participant to sit in a
circle. After a short introduction, we went on the trip to “How to Persuade
People in Words Concisely?”
Main Ideas of “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW
1. physical beauty fades with time
2. death will come to us all of sudden
3. time is running out little by little
4. life is full of uncertainty
5. life is precious, so it needs to be nourished, cherished, protected,
and fulfilled.
Extended Ideas of “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW
“Carpe Diem”, a Latin phrase means “seize the day while you may.” It
urges the target reader not to waste time pondering but take actions
immediately.
Application of “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW
In Business:
(Life insurance) Treat everyone better because future is hard to predict.
(Negotiation) Chances wait for no men.
(Market) Take it or regret later.
(Nike) Just Do It!
In Work:
(Manager) Work smart—enjoy working
In Daily Lives:
(Proposal) Marry me while we are young
(Decision) “To be or not to be is not a question but a decision”
Before the Application of “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW
Love your target reader first before they love you. Always have them in mind
while writing.
Know your target--Specific ones such as your buyer, lover or Non-specific
ones like general public.
Skill 1 while Applying “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW
Write down each word on a piece of paper and brainstorm things that you can
associate with your goal and find images as the following examples:
1. a hollow skull could represent death
2. a blossoming trees could express life
3. a winged clock could represent time
Skill 2 while Applying “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~ Words, Words
Example: “anger”
Distinguish the gradual difference of its “synonyms” like wrath,
irritation, and indignation while its “antonyms” are calm, self-control,
forbearance, patience.
Then choose the right words which can exactly convey your ideas!!!
Skill 3 while Applying “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~ Sharp Senses
Call for all five senses from your target reader such as sight, sound, smell,
touch,and taste into your description.
Say it indirectly and skillfully to “trap” them to be your followers
Skill 4 while Applying “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~ Forms
Any forms can serve the purpose in “visual art” like painting, movies, “
written form” in prose, poetry, or “vocal art” like opera, and so on.
Most poems sound melodiously because of rhymes.
Rhymes: regular sound patterns in the stanzas of each poem.
Non-rhymed: non- rhymed poems sometimes are marvelous if elaborately written,
which is named “Free Verse.”
Skill 5 while Applying “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~ Describe by “
Event? Object? Moving Object (Person or Animal)”? Choose the one best to
serve your purpose
Classic Examples of “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~
Lesson 1:
Different Approaches of the same goal, “Carpe Diem”—Tombs & Proposal---
1. ---Death is longer than life: Tombs “古詩十九首之十三” ~ 驅車上東門,
遙望郭北墓,白楊何蕭蕭,松柏夾廣路,下有陳死人,杳杳即長暮,潛寐黃泉下,千載永不寤,
浩浩陰陽移,年命如朝露,人生忽如寄,壽無金石固~
---Life is short :( Proposal)
”To His Coy Mistress” by Andrew Marvell,
Had we but world enough and time;
This coyness, lady, was no crime. ~
Lesson 2:
Image of “Cat”—an Animal--
In “Fog” by Carl Sandburg, he choose “cat” to describe “Fog” because
they both are mysterious, soundless, moving on and he carefully chose the
words to sound soft while reading.
Lesson 3
Bridal Couch, Narrow bed, Any Bed? –An event of “Wedding Night”-
In “Bridal Couch” by Donald J. Lloyd, he successfully associated them
together in an event of “wedding night” to covey “Life” and “Death” and
how to “Live to the most of it.”
Lesson 4
“Eternity” or “Life”—an Event---
In Greek Mythology, Sibyl, a witch, was granted with “Longevity.” Long time
later, a child asked what wish she wanted. She replied, “I want to die.”
Truly, “Long existence” is completely meaningless without “life.”
However, we all agree “Youth is not a time of time; it is a state of mind”
by Samuel Ullman.
Lesson 5
Images of “Morning Dew”---Poets’ Choice--
Both Chinese and English poets like to use “morning dew” to indicate life
can be finished soon as the dew vanished in the morning.
---Chinese: “短歌行”by 曹操,
“對酒當歌,人生幾何? 譬如朝露,去日苦多。 ~”
----English: “To Daffodils” by Robert Herrick,
”~ We die ;As your hours do, and dry Away, Like to the summer's rain; Or as
the pearls of morning's dew, Ne'er to be found again.”
Avoid using the “cliché” as your descriptive tools and always find fresh
word or images to illustrate your ideas!!!
Blissers’ Application of “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~
"Poetry" by Nania
Come, my inspiration. Let us prove
While we can, the sports of love
Delicious cook is not from the book
Good wine is not vented in one night
Wonderful pretties are well cared and rare.
"Unmanned Aerial Vehicle" by Kevin Huang
As a little bird's wing
Sneaking into the blue, not wet
Murmuring stream is eyeing
Grain of rice it needs
Longer ride
Little cost
“Caterpillar” by Ellen
One little crawling caterpillar
Is asking the flowers:
Why no one sees me?
Then asking the grass:
Why no one cares about me?
No single word he gets
And he never gets
"Faith" by Cara
The pure heart is like water
The observing eyes are crystal
The listening ears are eternal
The recording pen invigorated
The thinking paper revolts
And natural as I is a fighter.
“Rush-rush?” By Berkeley
Eager first, anger last forever
"Lie" down for a rest
Or it's a waste?
"Lie" to make it?
Line up to" waste" is no "waste"!
"Sleeping Pills" by Johnson
Last but not the least
Once you get used to it
You will fall in love with it
So gentle and mild
Order it now
Call me now
Once you take it
You will have a sound sleep
Once you don't have it
You will become a zombie
Once you take it
You will be fantastic
Once you have a good quality
Your life will be full of energy.
“Tranquility” by Tina
Still at eight o'clock
Several cows wondering the green landscape
Just enjoy the complete silence alone
Surely big sounds arouse
The nature is quiet and full of lives
From the bugs and the winds
**Reflections:
We appreciated the efforts of Annie, assistant Cara and all the other
participants. We seized the moment which was never called back but left the
poems to trace our steps.
Applying “Persuasive Art”--Seize it NOW~~
After leaving “Persuasive Art” in poem, some Blissers joined an activity in
Taipei Fine Arts Museum, in which they danced to paraphrase poems, or enjoy
the lives in any form of “Carpe Diem”!!!
