[題目] should的用法

題目：
The boy turned around quickly lest the girl he liked ____ see him blush.
A) should B) would C) might D) could
我自己直覺是選(A)，而解答也是(A)
但有板上強者能用文法觀念來解釋這一題的選項嗎?

P.S 我有查了一下牛津高級字典這個的例句
He ran away lest he (should/might) be seen.
should 和 might都可以使用，那B和D選項為什麼無法使用呢?
還是這是慣用語?
