[Mind] The Earth God and Goddess
There is something primitive and simple about the Earth God is rather attractive.
The Earth God is represented by a rough clay or stone images,in a sitting position,about 12 to 18 inches high.
His humble temple is very small,about the size of a dog house.
The Earth God looks after his immediate neghborhood.
He is th comforter in times of illness and distress.
His wife the Earth Goddess occupies the place of honor on his left and if he has a concubine she occupies thelesser position on his right.
The Earth Goddess is supposedly a nagging wife,so worshippers are careful to give her some attention even if they only want to pray to the Earth God.
In some places the Earth God sits alone, the story goes that he shared the national addiction to gambling and lost his wife in a bet.
The Earth Gods are fist mentioned in the Book of Rites,on e of the five classical books.
They are believed to have descended from deified ancestors of ancient farmers.
Magnificent temples on which Emperors lavished fortunes have fallen into ruin,but the modest havel of the Earth God remains in good repair.
