I'm just bored out of my mind right now... I think studying can really drive a person crazy... Not literally of course, but just getting really frustrated and bored ~_~ Had a discussion yesterday about the differences between studying and working. Assuming that you are an excellent and diligent student studying a rather difficult course, and a person working in a demanding job that has long hours. Which is better? Would you rather be the hard-working student, or the hard-working employee? Of course, people always say that being a student is the best time of your life. But then, with the assumptions above, you know, almost subconsciously, that there will always been something to do, some textbook to read, some extra notes to tidy up. In other words, the potential studying that you could do is almost limitless. Funny thing is, just about all students understand the concept of dimilishing returns when it comes to studying. The more you study, the less extra benefit you get out of it. And that if your only aim is to pass a course, you don't have to study hard out for it. But then, for the conscientious (sp?) student, there will always be what I call the "guilt" factor. Those that aim and strive to do their very best, will always think, and have a lingering doubt: if only I had read that article, would I have been able to write a better essay in the exam? If only I had done the extra reading, would it have helped me answer that question? etc etc. Work, on the other hand, works quite differently. I think when most comment on how it's best to be a student, they are thinking about the freedom that comes with being a student. Freedom both in the sense of the time and the fact that you don't have a boss. Students typically get long holidays, and although you face a certain amount of pressure from yourself, your family, friends etc, most of it is self- imposed. And if you don't do well, the consequences are not that bad. Work: assuming you are an employee, you have a BOSS. Your holidays generally consist of a few lousy weeks in a whole year, when the rest of the working population is on holiday too, so that wherever you go, it's excessively crowded and expensive. If you get something wrong at work, you face much worse pressures, you get yelled at by your boss, and, depending on the nature of your work, you might annoy the client, or get something terribly wrong. Then you might lose your job, by which time you have to worry about where your next meal is going to come from...... But as a worker, once you get home from work, you are guilt free :) You don't worry about extra readings, you don't worry about getting good marks in exams etc. Right now I'm suffering under the "too much studying" syndrome... So I'm thinking I'd rather be a worker. But I think, at the end of the day, if you balance everything up, yeah, it's better to be a student.... -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 222.153.79.140
