President's son-in-law President's son-in-law drops DPP
membership
President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) son-in-law, Chao Chien-ming
(趙建銘), resigned from the Democratic Progressive Party on
Thursday amid growing concern that he and his family were
allegedly involved in insider trading on the stock market.
His resignation is seen as an attempt to stop further damage to
the image of the President and the DPP.
Chao, in a statement released on Thursday, said that he was
resigning from the party to "avoid unnecessary political
confusion," which resulted from his family's alleged trading of
Taiwan Development Corp. shares.
Chao's announcement came amid criticism from many DPP lawmakers
that Chao and his family had hurt the DPP and the President's
image.
Chao, who was sworn in four years ago as a DPP member by President
Chen, who was then party chairman, reiterated that he has done
nothing illegal and that he would welcome a judicial
investigation.
