Fast Facts: Veterans Day AZUZ: Time for some Fast Facts! Veterans Day was originally called "Armistice Day" to mark the end of World War I. It's celebrated on November 11 because the Armistice, or truce, was signed on the "eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. Twenty years later, it became a federal holiday honoring World War I veterans. But President Eisenhower expanded it in 1954 to honor all Americans who'd served in the U.S. military. And the holiday's name became Veterans Day. While Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for Americans who've died serving the nation, Veterans Day is a time to thank all veterans for their service, whether it was during war or peacetime. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 25 million veterans are alive today http://edition.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/11/09/transcript.fri/index.html ※ 編輯: zmcse 來自: 59.121.117.246 (11/12 00:00)
