Part 3: 本題最終階段判別根據之前說明，我們排除掉語意不明的考慮後，本題答案的 (C)(D) 就只剩下考 not ... but 這組「相關連接詞」(correlative conjuction) 的平行問題。由於需要平行，所以 not 與 but 兩者後面所接結構必須在文法上屬同一類別，而這題的關鍵就在於 not 後面到底接的是什麼？以(C)代入原文展開後得： Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the products of natural selection, favored because they enhance reproduction or survival, but simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments. 一般人都會直覺認為是 not 後面接的是「名詞片語」(the product of ...) ，所以就會選 (C) 而讓另一個「名詞片語」(simply random by-products)，去跟前半的 the product 去平行。如前所述，這是錯誤的。因為 simply random by-products 不是「名詞片語」，因為 simply 是副詞，而這個副詞在語意上很明顯不是修飾 random 的，所以我們不能將這三個字看成是 ([副詞＋形容詞]＋名詞) ─> 這是名詞片語而只能看成是 [副詞]＋([形容詞]＋名詞) ─> 這是副詞＋名詞片語只有 random by-products 才是名詞片語，加上 simply 之後，這三個字並不是名詞片語，所以就無法構成 not + 名詞片語 ... but + 名詞片語的平行。另外 simply 這個副詞放在這裡，看不出這個字到底修飾了誰，也會產生另一個文法上的錯誤。 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 至於為何要選 (D)，理由如下： (D) Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that many biological traits are not the products of natural selection, favored because they enhance reproduction or survival, but are simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments. 我們發現加上了 are 之後，simply 明顯是用來修飾動詞 are 的，意思是「只是」。所以 simply 就不會是無家可歸的文法孤兒了。 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 最後問題是： are not the products ... but are simply random by-products ... 這樣寫法為何可以滿足 not ... but 的平行要求？如果我們可以將原文重點部分寫成這樣的話： many biological traits [not are] the products of ... [but are] simply random by-products ... 是不是看起來就平行了： not + are + 補語 (名詞片語) but + are simply + 補語 (名詞片語) 其中副詞 simply 修飾動詞 are，所以 are simply 還是「動詞(片語)」。因此構成了 not + 動詞(片語) but + 動詞(片語) 的平行結構。至於最後卻寫成 [are not] the products ...
