185. (26406-!-item-!-188;#058&001926) When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950s, some 4,000 existed in the United States, but today there are less than one-quarter that many. A. there are less than one-quarter that many B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount ------------------------------------------------------------ 我們在解 SC 題目時，有個固定流程：先檢查文法，次檢查語意，最後看修辭。在方便時，文法、語意檢查可以同時進行；但是修辭一定要擺最後。根據這個原則，檢查答案 (C) 的部分，可以看出有 1. 用字 2. 主詞、動詞一致 3. 語意等三個問題 ------------------------------------------------------------ 1-1. 用字 amount 或 number 關於 amount 的用法，已經在前面發文討論過，在此不再贅述。不過要特別說明的是：這裡的 amount 後面並沒有接 of... 所以之前發文所述的問題，與此處並不相同。根據題意，(C) 的 that amount 是要用來替換 4000 這個數字，所以應該選的字是 number 而非 amount。也就是該用 that number。此處的 that 是指示形容詞，用來指前面出現過的數字，所以 that 本身沒有問題。 ------------------------------------------------------------ 1-2. 用字 fewer 或 less 不論答案 (C) 用 number 還是 amount，這兩個字本身在此都是單數。因此，加上了 one-quarter 之後， one-quater of that number 仍然是單數。所以前面要加上「小於」時，應該用 less 而非 fewer less than one-quarter of that number ------------------------------------------------------------ 2. 主詞、動詞一致由於 less than one-quarter of that number 算單數，所以原來 (C) 用 there are, 就犯了主詞、動詞不一致的錯誤。應該改成 there is ------------------------------------------------------------ 3. 語意修改過後的 (C) 加上原文的 but today 成為 but today there is less than one-quarter of that number 而這樣的寫法，則犯了語意不明的錯誤。關於語意不明的問題，可以試著將這句翻譯出來便可理解：「不過今日有不到四分之一的那個數字」 ------------------------------------------------------------ 結論：答案 (C) 至少錯了三處，因此當然被淘汰出局了。以上，提供各位參考謝忠理 xiezl.info@gmail.com http://oketw.blogspot.tw -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 111.250.67.163 ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/GMAT/M.1432747734.A.6FB.html
