[問題] Why does "venit" mean "came"?

The sentence below is quoted from Wheelock's Latin, 7th edition, page 140. 1. Diligio puellam quae ex Italia venit. I admire the girl who came from Italy. Why is "venit"="came"? Isn't venit in the present tense? --
